Julia
Bloomin' Grilled Apples are a warm and delicious dessert made by slicing whole apples into a beautiful bloom shape and grilling them with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. As they cook, the apples soften and caramelize, creating a sweet, tender treat perfect for backyard barbecues, fall gatherings, or an easy grilled dessert.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium apples Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Aluminum foil
  • Optional Toppings
  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Caramel sauce
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat the grill to medium heat (about 375°F / 190°C).
  • Wash the apples thoroughly. Using a sharp knife, slice each apple vertically into thin sections, stopping about ½ inch from the bottom so the apple stays intact.
  • Gently fan the slices outward to create the bloom shape.
  • Place each apple on a small sheet of aluminum foil.
  • In a small bowl, mix melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until smooth.
  • Spoon the mixture evenly over each apple, allowing some of it to flow between the slices.
  • Wrap the foil loosely around the base of the apple, leaving the top slightly open.
  • Place the apples on the grill and cook for 15–20 minutes, until the apples become soft and the sugar mixture forms a caramel-like glaze.
  • Remove from the grill and allow the apples to rest for 3–5 minutes.
  • Serve warm with optional toppings like vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, or chopped nuts.

Notes

  • Be careful not to cut all the way through the apple, or it will fall apart while grilling.
  • Use firm apple varieties so they hold their shape during cooking.
  • Insert a fork into the apple to check tenderness before removing from the grill.
  • You can bake these apples in the oven at 375°F for about 25 minutes if a grill is unavailable.
