Ingredients

  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • ½ teaspoon peppermint extract
  • Food coloring optional
  • Granulated sugar for rolling
  • Cornstarch for dusting surface, optional

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat softened cream cheese until smooth and fluffy.
  • Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low until combined.
  • Increase speed to medium and beat until smooth and dough-like.
  • Add peppermint extract and mix well.
  • If coloring, divide dough into separate bowls and mix in gel food coloring.
  • Scoop about 1 teaspoon of dough and roll into smooth balls.
  • Roll each ball in granulated sugar.
  • Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Gently press each ball with a fork to create a classic mint pattern.
  • Let air dry at room temperature for 4–6 hours until firm outside but soft inside.
  • For faster setting, refrigerate for 2 hours.
  • Store in an airtight container, separating layers with wax paper.

Notes

  • Use room temperature cream cheese to avoid lumps.
  • Do not overuse peppermint extract; it can quickly overpower the flavor.
  • If dough is too sticky, add powdered sugar gradually.
  • If too dry, add 1 teaspoon softened cream cheese.
  • Gel food coloring works best without adding excess moisture.
  • Naturally gluten-free (verify powdered sugar label).
