- Main Ingredients
- 2 large yellow onions sliced into ⅛-inch rounds
- 1 cup buttermilk or milk
- 2 large eggs whisked
- Neutral oil for frying vegetable, canola, or peanut
- Coating & Seasonings
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1 tsp salt plus extra for finishing
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp paprika
Prep the Onions
Peel onions and slice into thin ⅛-inch rounds. Separate into rings, breaking large rings into chip-size pieces. Pat completely dry.
Set Up Breading Station
Bowl 1: Flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika
Bowl 2: Whisked eggs + milk
(Optional) Bowl 3: Extra seasoned flour for double coating
Coat the Onion Chips
Dredge onion slices in flour mixture → dip in egg wash → coat again in flour.
Cook (Choose Method Below)
Frying (Crispiest):
Heat oil to 350°F (175°C)
Fry in small batches for 2–3 minutes, flipping once
Remove when deep golden
Air Fryer:
Preheat to 375°F
Lightly spray chips with oil
Cook 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway
Oven-Baked:
Preheat oven to 425°F
Place chips on wire rack over baking sheet
Bake 15–18 minutes, flipping once
Finish & Season
Drain on paper towels or wire rack. Sprinkle lightly with salt while hot.
