Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup apple cider (fresh or store-bought) Provides the apple flavor
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar Sweetens the donut
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted Adds richness
  • 1 large egg For binding the mixture
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances flavor

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Base for the donuts
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder Leavening agent
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Helps the donuts rise
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Adds warmth and spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg Enhances flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Balances sweetness

For Frying

  • Oil (vegetable or canola) For frying the donuts

For Topping

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon cinnamon For coating the donuts

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a medium saucepan, bring 1 cup of apple cider to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes until it reduces to about 1/3 cup. Allow it to cool slightly.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the reduced apple cider, sugar, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay!
  • Cover the dough with plastic wrap and chill it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
  • On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/2-inch thick. Use a donut cutter or two different-sized round cookie cutters to cut out donuts and holes.

Frying

  • In a deep pot, heat oil to 365°F (185°C). Carefully drop in your donuts, a few at a time, and fry until golden brown on both sides, about 1-2 minutes per side.
  • Remove the donuts from the oil and drain them on paper towels. While still warm, toss them in the cinnamon-sugar mix for that delightful finish.

Serving

  • Snack on them warm, or serve them with a side of apple cider for that perfect fall experience!

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat in the oven for softness. Don’t skip the cider reduction for enhanced flavor.
