Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup Sloppy Joe sauce store-bought
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough quartered or 1 bag frozen tater tots
  • –2 cups shredded cheddar or Colby Jack cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Cook aromatics: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook 3–4 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  • Brown beef: Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess grease.
  • Make sauce: Stir in Sloppy Joe sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer 5 minutes.
  • Assemble: Spread biscuit pieces or tater tots evenly in the baking dish. Spoon meat mixture over the top. Sprinkle evenly with cheese.
  • Bake: Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes, until bubbly and biscuits are cooked through.
  • Rest: Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Drain the beef well to avoid a soggy casserole.
  • Baking uncovered helps excess moisture evaporate.
  • For extra browning, broil for 2–3 minutes at the end (watch closely).
